A 50-year-old man was sentenced to 37 years in prison for killing a neighborhood acquaintance in Denver Harbor in broad daylight in 2021, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Our hearts go out to the friends and family of this man, who was the victim of a premeditated, calculated and deliberate attack,” Ogg said. “It was important to get justice and we hope this conclusion gives peace and closure to the victim’s loved ones.”
Jose Gutierrez, 50, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 37 years in prison late Friday by a Harris County jury for the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Robert Andrew Almendarez around noon on October 8, 2021.
A Houston man who pistol-whipped and then fatally shot his girlfriend’s adult brother during an argument in 2022 was sentenced to life in prison by a Harris County jury, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Domestic violence doesn’t just affect the person who is being abused, it affects the entire family,” Ogg said. “All too often domestic violence escalates to murder, and this case shows that a family member can lose their life just trying to help someone else get out of an abusive relationship.”
Kempsha L. Wilson, 28, was sentenced Thursday after five days of trial for the murder of 32-year-old Spencer Nichols on Feb. 15, 2022.
A Brenham man who held a Spring mother at gunpoint in her garage earlier this year while demanding money and sexual acts was sentenced to 20 years in prison and must register as a sex offender for life, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This kind of random assault is everyone’s nightmare, and we are glad we were able to get justice for this family,” Ogg said. “Even after he spends 20 years behind bars, he will have to deal with the consequences of what he did for the rest of his life.”
Jeremy Kejuan Wright, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to six crimes, including aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.
A Houston man was sentenced to life in prison this week for his role in two murders in 2020, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“In this case, there are two families who lost loved ones to the kind of rampant gun violence that we are seeing far too often in Harris County,” Ogg said. “We mourn with the families of the victims, and we hope that getting justice in their cases brings them at lease a small amount of peace.”

A Baytown man was sentenced to 46 years in prison by a Harris County jury for the murder of his ex-wife in 2016, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Domestic violence can take a lot of different forms, but too often we see it escalate into murder,” Ogg said. “There is absolutely no reason this man’s ex-wife and the mother of his children should be dead.”
Allen Dale Edwards, 44, was sentenced to prison by a jury late Tuesday after seven days of trial. He was convicted of murder for fatally shooting 29-year-old Keyanna Cherrell Gardiner on March 19, 2016.
A Houston woman was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder in the stabbing death of her own mother in 2021, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This is a tragic case and should not have happened, but prosecutors with our Homicide Division were able to get justice for the victim,” Ogg said.
Ericka Nicole McDonald, 31, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing 51-year-old Terri Mendoza at her apartment on Willow Place Drive in northwest Houston on August 16, 2021.
A Houston man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing two men from Louisiana while stopping them in traffic on I-10 to gun them down, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“There is no place in our community for this kind of extreme gun violence,” Ogg said. “People can’t settle their disputes with a gun, and they certainly can’t start shooting on a freeway crowded with innocent commuters and kids.”

A Houston man was sentenced Monday to 22 years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to murder in a fatal shooting in Spring, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This was a planned and premeditated attack on an unsuspecting visitor to Houston, and there have to be consequences,” Ogg said. “We were ready and willing to go to trial and seek justice in this case when the defendant opted to ask the judge to decide punishment, and that’s his choice.”
James Ray Lane, 24, pleaded guilty to murder on August 17 for gunning down Gregory L. Moore on June 28, 2021. Lane underwent a pre-sentence investigation during the past two months, and his punishment was decided by a judge after a day-long hearing Monday.
A Baytown woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a judge after pleading guilty to murder for robbing and killing a 65-year-old man who used a wheelchair, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“The elderly and disabled people in our community are extremely vulnerable to becoming victims of violence,” Ogg said. “This couple took advantage of this man’s kindness and deserves to spend decades in prison.”
Alicia Keator, 40, and her boyfriend, Marcus Donnell Gilbert, who was known as Skunk, have both pleaded guilty to murder in the death of John Henry Fernandez, 65, who was found on Jan. 2, 2018, with his hands and feet bound and mouth taped shut. He had also been suffocated.
A Baytown woman who killed a man on Christmas in 2017 was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Alicia Keator, 40, pleaded guilty to murder last week. She and her boyfriend, 41-year-old Marcus Donnell Gilbert, killed and robbed John Henry Fernandez, whose body wasn't found until more than a week after he was killed.
