A Houston man who was involved in a months-long crime spree that left five people dead in 2019 was sentenced Friday to 60 years in prison after the families gave victim impact statements, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“We echo the families’ sentiments that this man has no respect for human life and is a danger to the community,” Ogg said. “We sincerely hope that he serves every single day of the 60-year prison sentence.”
Louis Malik Santee, 25, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder in exchange for three 60-year prison sentences on the eve of his capital murder trial that was expected to begin this week. Those sentences will run concurrently.
A 19-year-old Houston man has pleaded guilty to the 2022 murder of his former girlfriend, 16-year-old Diamond Alvarez, in exchange for a 45-year prison sentence, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Tuesday.
“This is a heartbreaking domestic violence case of a young girl who was murdered by someone she dated,” Ogg said. “Our office has devoted significant resources, including investigators, prosecutors and public service campaigns to raise awareness about the incredible danger of intimate partner violence to try to end horrible cases like this.”
Frank DeLeon pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder for shooting Alvarez more than 20 times as she walked her dog near her home on January 11, 2022.
A Katy man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for a 2021 murder at a motel in Houston’s Energy Corridor, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Unfortunately, we see cases like this far too often in which someone pulls a gun and starts shooting without any regard for the consequences,” Ogg said. “We were ready to go trial when this defendant accepted responsibility for what he did, and hopefully seeing justice served in this case will give this young man’s family some closure.”
Derek Maurice Singleton, 25, pleaded guilty to murder on the eve of trial on Friday in the shooting death of 22-year-old Eric Soniat in a car in the parking lot of a motel in the 14800 block of Park Row at about 6 p.m. on April 2, 2021.
A Houston man, who fatally shot a 24-year-old at a Copperfield-area apartment complex in 2020, was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for murder, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Gun violence is out of control in Harris County because of cases like this in which someone thinks a handgun gives them a right to steal, maim and kill,” Ogg said. “The victim in this case had a loving family and a bright future, and all of that was taken away from him.”
Darius Handsborough, 29, agreed on Monday to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of murder earlier this month by a Harris County jury for the death of Devonte Antrel Purdue on August 13, 2020.
A Houston man pleaded guilty on the eve of trial and was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting a man in 2019, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“Gun violence in Houston has reached epidemic levels, and it is because people think it is okay to start shooting when they have a minor disagreement,” Ogg said. “We were able to get justice for the family of this promising young man, but there was absolutely no reason he had to lose his life to gun violence.”
Dashadd McNeil, 30, pleaded guilty to murder in exchange for a 30-year prison sentence for killing 25-year-old Juston Allen Walker at Coventry Square Apartments near Bissonnet on October 5, 2019.
A Houston man was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for his role in three attacks, including one in Houston’s Chinatown that left a woman paralyzed, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced today.
Joseph Harrell, 18, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery causing serious bodily injury for a mid-day Feb. 13 attack on Nhung Troung that left the 41-year-old woman in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down.
The attack was widely reported by Houston media after Harrell was seen on surveillance video picking up the victim and body slamming her to the ground. It also highlighted “jugging,” in which a robber watches customers at banks or shopping areas before following them to a different location to steal their money or valuables.
A Houston man was sentenced to life in prison without parole late Thursday after being convicted of capital murder in the robbery and shooting of an employee at a Sunnyside recording studio specializing in rap and hip hop, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This was an intentional and premeditated armed robbery and shootout,” Ogg said. “This defendant gunned down a man who was a good father and a loving grandfather for practically nothing, and because of that, this defendant belongs in prison for the rest of his life.”
Ethan Jenkins, 28, was convicted of capital murder by a Harris County jury for robbing and killing 42-year-old Jon Whitfield at about 10 p.m. on March 25, 2019.
A Harris County jury on Thursday sentenced a 40-year-old man to life in prison and a $10,000 fine for the 2020 murder of his estranged girlfriend in Baytown, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This is a heartbreaking example of how dangerous domestic violence can be, especially when a woman is trying to get out of a bad situation,” Ogg said. “This man thought he should be allowed to control a woman he had a brief relationship with, and when the relationship ended, he executed her in cold blood.”
Robert Joseph Roberts, 40, fatally shot 31-year-old Jazmin Simone Garrett in her car at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Northwood Drive in Baytown on October 28, 2020.
A Houston man who fatally shot a woman in 2017 and then was charged with a second murder in 2020 was sentenced late Tuesday to life in prison, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
“This defendant was involved in two separate fatal shootings, including one where he grievously injured two women out on a ‘girls’ night’ with their friend,” Ogg said. “In the second shooting, he opened fire at a gas station in broad daylight and could have killed even more people. The consequences for that kind of rampant gun violence has to be a life sentence.”
Gerald Dewayne Washington, 30, was convicted of murder by a Harris County jury on Monday, the seventh day of trial, for the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Crystal Turner. On Tuesday, the eighth day of trial, Washington was sentenced by state District Judge Ramona Franklin to life in prison.
A Houston man pleaded guilty to murder Monday in exchange for a life sentence in prison for fatally shooting the manager of a convenience store with a game room in south Houston, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced. He was the second man to plead guilty in the 2021 murder.
“This case was solved by law enforcement, but we were able to get justice because civilians who were witnesses in this case were willing to come to court and testify,” Ogg said. “We mourn with the family who lost this beloved uncle and brother to senseless gun violence.”
Aaron Chisolm, 32, admitted to his role in the robbery and shooting of two men at a convenience store in the 7200 block of Long Drive at about 2:45 a.m. on February 16, 2021.
